5 Truths for the Small Business Owner

Marken Media Co. became our full-time focus three years ago, and we’ll celebrate two years since we first got the keys to our space on College Ave. next month. (Time flies!)

In the year 2020, small businesses have experienced things we never could have anticipated. Sudden closures. Government mandates. The daily barrage of opinions and opposing scientific views.

As Christians who happen to be business owners, we choose to lead with faith. We hope you are encouraged by these biblical truths as you and your business navigate uncharted waters.

  1. You are essential.
No matter what industry your business falls under, you are essential. There are tasks your Creator has equipped you to do. You have been given specific talents, skills, and connections for a reason. Not only are you essential, we believe your business is, too. Think about it this way – you have supported yourself and your family with your business for how long? That alone is proof that even the marketplace deems you essential. You help people. You serve your customers. You make their lives easier, more efficient, or help them save time and money.

This challenging time provides opportunities for pivots or adjustments in your business. Don’t be discouraged. Your business provides value, and you are essential.

For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.
    Ephesians 2:10

  2. There are good things ahead.

There’s a shirt Marcus designed a few years back that says, “The Best is Yet to Come.” We believe that is true even in 2020. God has good plans for you and for your business. There are good things ahead.

For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope. Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will hear you. You will seek me and find me, when you seek me with all your heart.

    Jeremiah 29:11-13

  3. Lean on others.
Feeling lonely? Facing uncertainties in your business? Reach out to friends or fellow small business owners. Take time to encourage each other. If someone comes to mind, call them. Check on each other. It’s OK to lean on others.

Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God, and whoever loves has been born of God and knows God. 1 John 4:7

  4. Keep your eyes on Jesus.
We can face challenges and uncertainties with our eyes focused on God’s good plans and His proven capacity to care for us – not frozen with fear. We can be certain of His love because we know His plans are for our good and He is all-powerful – even in uncertain circumstances. By keeping our eyes on Jesus and our trust in Him, our minds are kept in perfect peace.

Looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider him who endured from sinners such hostility against himself, so that you may not grow weary or fainthearted. Hebrews 12:2-3

You keep him in perfect peace
whose mind is stayed on you,
because he trusts in you. Isaiah 26:3

  5. Take the time to listen.

What do your clients need? How have your customers’ needs changed? How can you best serve them? Take time to listen. If you can, get outside! We recently took a short trip to the coast and just taking some time to sit on the beach and soak in the sun brought us so much refreshment. We came back with clarity on our goals for this season and a strong renewed sense of purpose.

A fool takes no pleasure in understanding, but only in expressing his opinion. Proverbs 18:12

Remind them… to speak evil of no one, to avoid quarreling, to be gentle, and to show perfect courtesy toward all people. Titus 3:1-2
