In Case No One Has Told You Lately
You’re doing a good job.
Sometimes you feel like the bases are loaded and there are already two outs. You’re up to bat, and you haven’t had your best average the past couple of years.
It’s all riding on me, you think. Everyone is watching.
Quick Story
During our summer road trip to Tennessee we had an unexpected adventure. Or that’s what I can call it now.
On the morning of the second day, my ever-faithful Honda Odyssey check engine light came on. Strike one. We were somewhere between Dallas and the Arkansas border with a day of driving still to go. (Because you can just about double the length of expected travel time when you have kids with you!)
We took the next exit and found ourselves in the tiny town of Mt. Pleasant, Texas — thankfully they had an O’Reilly Auto Parts. Their kind staff ran tests and found we needed a new alternator. They quickly arranged for us to get it replaced with the mechanic in town. The vacation could still be saved! My alternator was under warranty. We thought, Whew! Mini crisis averted.
Marcus started the van, and we headed that way. For about three feet. Then the car battery died. Strike two. Not the best way to start a vacation, right? Marcus ran inside to get help.
Just as I was about to lose hope and call in hangry, Marcus appeared with new HotWheels cars for each of our three kiddos who had grown impatient.
After a quick call back to the mechanic, he offered a drive our family of 5 from his repair shop to a nearby restaurant where we could get lunch while our car was made road-ready again. So kind.
We enjoyed lunch and a show at Luigi’s where the staff graciously let our kiddos watch cartoons on their television in the party room after we’d finished our meal.
Before long, we were on the road again — making family memories we'll treasure.
The Power of Words
That mini adventure during our trip made us think, Just how pleasant is Mt. Pleasant! Now I’m not saying everyone in the town lives up to the name, but everyone we met that day sure did.
Our experience of the people and small businesses in Mt. Pleasant turned what would normally have been an unpleasant experience into a pleasant one.
There is power in the words you use to describe things. Don’t call the game before it’s over. Don’t call a strike out before you’ve even swung. You have created something out of nothing. You saw potential when others couldn't see it yet. You're doing a good job.
