What My Plants Reminded Me
Growth is Slow
When it comes to growth, whether it’s personal growth, growth in your business, or the growth of your houseplants, we don’t always see change happening above the surface. That’s because growth is slow.
I recently planted some DollarTree wildflower seeds with the kiddos. We sprinkled the box of seeds in several of the empty pots littering our front porch that had been vacated after the Texas snowpocalypse. To be honest, I didn’t really expect much. They’re just $1 seeds after all.
Sometimes when it comes to growth, we worry about the quality of the seeds we are planting, Will it make a difference? Will what I’m doing actually work? Are they getting enough sun? Enough water? Did I plant them deep enough? Do I even know what I’m doing?
In the midst of waiting to see those tiny, little green symbols of hope pushing through the soil, it’s good and necessary to remind ourselves that growth is slow.
2. Growth is Sweet
Just as surely as growth is slow, growth is sweet to see, isn’t it? When our youngest learned how to walk without assistance, she had the two biggest cheerleaders and helpers around. Her brothers were always right there to assist, and to enjoy her newfound skill with claps of joy and praise.
So far, we have harvested a small handful of strawberries from our potted strawberry plant. Every time there is a ripe, little berry waiting to be picked we have a sweet celebration right there in the driveway. And for now at least, mom always gets to be the one to eat it!
Celebrate the little victories. Growing, producing, and serving others is a big deal. If no one is cheering you on, if no one has noticed that blossom-turned-fruit in your life or your business – this is us cheering you on!
You’re doing a good work. Your effort, your heart, your dedication is paying off. See the evidence when you see those little sprouts coming up out of the ground. Growth matters. Celebrate your victories even when it may feel insignificant because growth is sweet.
3. Growth Can Bring Good Surprises
Some of our flowers made it through the snow! I had pulled as many plants into the playroom as I could to shelter them from the coming freezing temps (little did I know that our house would be 45 degrees for several days while the powers that be decided who got electricity). We were shocked when a tub of flowers that we couldn’t bring indoors made it through the snow and have actually seemed to thrive since the storm. Talk about taking the unexpected in stride!
While trimming one of our sago palms I found what I thought was a rock at first. The more I trimmed, the more I found. It was seeds. Grandma tells me everything about the sago palm is dangerous for dogs, and since we’ve got two, we did our best to find and remove all the seeds hiding in between branches and just underneath the palms. Sometimes growth requires pruning prickly branches and removing what’s toxic. Growth will bring surprises.
4. Growth is a Gift
My aunt has been growing succulents (among the many, many other things she can grow!) and she gifted one to me. Growth is a gift. You can’t share if you’re not growing. I’d go so far as to say, I don’t think your business can really serve others well if you’re not growing. And while growth is sometimes heavy on the work end and slow (or patient) on the pay-off, it is sweet. There are definitely surprises along the way — some good, and some not so fun. But growth is a gift. Growth makes a difference.
