Reduce Downtime Now: The Rest and Invest Strategy

Remember when Dunder Mifflin faces a product recall crisis? Jim and Pam decide to turn the office into a "Fun and Games Day" to lift spirits despite the chaos.

During a game of "Flonkerton," an eccentric sport that involves wearing cardboard boxes as footwear, the employees stumble and fall, making slow progress in a hilarious race around the office.

Just like The Office, our slow seasons can sometimes feel like a quirky race with unique challenges. It's all about how we navigate it with humor, enthusiasm, and a little creativity.

Marcus and I have experienced this as well. When our fourth child was born last year, we had an unexpected SLOW DOWN in work. (It all worked out, I was just given a God-prescribed maternity rest for which I am SOOO thankful!)

We all know that not every season is a bustling one. Sometimes, things slow down, and you find yourself with a bit more breathing room in your schedule.

So, what do you do during these moments of respite?

I'm here to share with you a simple yet profound mantra for making the most of your slow season: Rest and Invest.

Rest: Recharge Your Batteries

  1. Hobbies and Interests:
Remember those hobbies you've put on the back burner? It's time to dust them off and reignite your passions. Whether it's painting, gardening, or trying out new recipes, immersing yourself in what you love can be incredibly therapeutic. I recently learned how to embroider and I love it!

  2. Read, Learn, Grow: Dive into those books you've been meaning to read. Whether it's for personal growth, industry insights, or simply for pleasure, reading can be a fantastic way to relax and expand your knowledge. Are you a nightstand book stacker like me?

  3. Tackle the To-Do List: We all have that list of tasks we've been procrastinating. Use this downtime to tick off those items one by one. The satisfaction of completion will be immensely rewarding.

  4. Log Off and Unplug: In today's digital age, it's easy to get caught up in the never-ending cycle of work. Set boundaries for yourself. Log off work, be present in the moment, and spend quality time with your loved ones. A fun way we've done this in our family is to have periodic "screen free" days where we do our best to not use screens of any kind for an entire day! Our kids had fun with it, too!

Invest: Grow Your Business and Yourself

  1. Educational Opportunities: That course or workshop you've been eyeing? Now's the perfect time to enroll. Investing in education can lead to new skills, fresh perspectives, and potential business growth. I'm addicted to workshops! I went to a couple events at Geekdom's San Antonio Startup Week and now I can't wait for next year!

  2. Meet with a Coach: Consider meeting with a business coach or mentor. They can provide invaluable guidance, helping you set clear goals and develop strategies to achieve them. If you need a recommendation, I'd love to connect you with AK and Jess over at The Collective.

  3. Infrastructure and Systems: Use this downtime to assess your business infrastructure and systems. Streamlining processes can save you time and resources during busier periods.

  4. Marketing and Branding: Revisit your marketing strategy. Are there areas where you can improve or expand? A slow season is a fantastic time to fine-tune your brand's image and messaging.

  5. Networking: Build and strengthen your professional network. Connect with industry peers and potential clients. You never know where these relationships might lead in the future. Break out of your routine, visit a neighboring chamber of commerce or networking event that you haven't been to before!

Rest and Invest: A Winning Combination

It's an opportunity to find balance, to recharge your creativity, and to set the stage for future success. By taking care of yourself and your business during these quieter moments, you'll be better equipped to face the hustle and bustle of the busy season.
